Municipal poll contestant shot in Uttar Pradesh
June 19th, 2012 - 7:26 pm ICT by IANSLucknow, June 19 (IANS) A candidate for the upcoming municipal corporation elections in Uttar Pradesh was shot and critically wounded by unidentified motorbike-borne assailants in Meerut, 450 km from here, police said Tuesday.
According to police, Zahid Hasan Rana was returning from his campaign Monday night when the assailants fired at him at the Kasthala road in Jaani police station area. A bullet pierced his stomach and he slumped on the ground.
Meerut Senior Superintendent of Police K. Satyanarayan told IANS that prima facie the case appeared to be of political rivalry. He said police were in touch with family members and associates of Rana and were trying to nab the attackers.
The elections to the Meerut Municipal Corporation are scheduled to be held June 24.
