Mulayam criticises action against Ramdev
June 6th, 2011 - 9:48 pm ICT by IANSAgra, June 6 (IANS) Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav Monday criticised the post-midnight raid at Delhi’s Ramlila Ground to evict Baba Ramdev and his supporters, but was evasive about withdrawing support to the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government on the issue.
Addressing a press conference here on the eve of his party’s two-day national convention, Mulayam Singh Yadav said the police action was highly undemocratic and uncivilised.
But he refused to give any categorical answer to a question whether he would withdraw the Samajwadi Party’s outside support to the UPA.
He also voiced concern on the issue of “forceful” acquisition of farmers’ land in Uttar Pradesh, and said that rapidly declining agricultural land could create a food crisis in the country.
Denouncing the state’s law and order condition, he said that in the “raj of a woman chief minister, there are rapes daily.”
The former defence minister also expressed concern over Chinese intrusions into Indian territory, and said India had no friends it could rely on.
The party’s national executive is meeting later Monday evening to finalise resolutions for the June 7-8 convention.
A party spokesman said strategies for next year’s Uttar Pradesh assembly elections will also be discussed.
