Sanjay Dutt New Delhi/Lucknow, Jan 17 (IANS) Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Mulayam Singh Yadav has accepted the resignation of Amar Singh from all his party posts, party leaders said Sunday.
“The party chief has accepted resignation of Amar Singh from party posts. He did so with a heavy heart,” SP Rajya Sabha member Veer Pal Singh Yadav told IANS.

The decision was taken after an urgent meeting of the party’s parliamentary board in Lucknow Friday, the MP said.

Party sources in Lucknow also told IANS that Mulayam Singh had said in Etawah that he had accepted Amar Singh’s resignation.

Veer Pal Singh denied that the resignation had come about because of differences between Amar Singh and party general secretary Ram Gopal Yadav, who is Mulayam Singh’s cousin. “He (Amar Singh) wanted to take rest for some period for health reasons,” the SP leader said, adding that it does not mean Amar Singh would leave the party.

“Amar Singh has helped in the party’s rise. Does one cut the tree one sows?” he asked.

Amar Singh had resigned as the party general secretary, spokesman and parliamentary board member Jan 6, citing health reasons. He had sent his resignation by fax from Dubai and had has not met the party chief since then.

However, he took potshots at Ram Gopal Yadav in TV interviews later.

Following Mulayam Yadav’s initial refusal to accept Amar Singh’s resignation, both he and Ram Gopal Yadav made conciliatory remarks towards each other. However, fresh tensions erupted between them a day later.

Amar Singh also expressed inability to be the chief guest at the closing function of the Saifai fest at Mulayam Singh’s village.

The SP has seen divisions over Amar Singh’s resignation. Actor-turned politician Sanjay Dutt resigned as party general secretary following Amar Singh and other Bollywood actors in the party - Jaya Prada and Jaya Bachchan, both MPs - have also backed him. The two MPs accompanied him to campaign for Farhan Ansari, son of party leader Abu Azmi, in the Bhiwandi by-poll in Maharashtra slated for Jan 20.

A section of SP legislators from the minority community had been urging Mulayam Singh to accept Amar Singh’s resignation.
