Mukherjee not well, skips Congress meetFebruary 22nd, 2009 - 8:24 pm ICT by IANS
Kolkata, Feb 22 (IANS) External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee Sunday could not attend a Congress party meeting at West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district because he was unwell, a party leader said.
“Mukherjee was to attend a party meeting at Jalpaiguri Sunday afternoon. But he felt pain in the abdomen and decided to postpone his visit to the hill district,” Congress leader Manas Bhuiya told IANS over telephone from Jalpaiguri.
The meeting was called to discuss ways to restore peace in the hills, especially the Dooars region.
The Comminist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M)-led Left Front government has completely failed in restoring peace and harmony among hillmen, including Gorkhas and tribals, Bhuiya said.
“It’s high time the central government took up the issue and resolved it. We feel the solution to this hill problem lies with the tripartite meeting among the central and state governments and the Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM),” Bhuiya said.
GJM activists, led by its president Bimal Gurung, have been leading a movement in the hills for a separate Gorkhaland state in Darjeeling hills, besides opposing the Sixth Schedule status for Darjeeling district.
