Mugabe spokesman rules out unity government: ReportJuly 1st, 2008 - 8:05 pm ICT by IANS
Johannesburg, July 1 (DPA) A spokesman for Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe Tuesday ruled out a Kenya-style unity government with the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), South African radio reported. Speaking at an African Union leaders’ summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, George Charamba said Kenya was not Zimbabwe and that there was no need for a unity government, South African radio quoted him as telling journalists.
His remarks came amid mounting tension around Mugabe at the summit that opened a day after he was sworn in as president for a further five years Sunday after elections slammed as undemocratic by African observers.
Security had been beefed up at the summit after journalists Monday night became engaged in a scuffle with Mugabe’s security men as he was leaving the summit venue, the radio report added.
