Mubarak’s wife signs off assets, to be released on bail(Lead)
May 17th, 2011 - 8:30 pm ICT by IANSCairo, May 17 (IANS) Egypt’s prosecutors will release former first lady Suzanne Mubarak on bail after she gave up her assets, Xinhua reported quoting the state-owned Nile TV Tuesday.
Suzanne has authorised the Illicit Gains Authority to withdraw her funds from two bank accounts and sell a villa in Cairo.
The wife of Egypt’s former president Hosni Mubarak has signed documents to hand over her property to the state, Egypt’s MENA news agency said.
The 70-year-old former first lady was questioned last week over suspicions that she used her husband’s position to illegally amass wealth. Shortly after the questioning, her 15-day detention in a Cairo prison was ordered.
Suzanne Thabet was hospitalised Friday after the country’s Illicit Gains Authority ordered to detain her for 15 days over charges of illegal acquisition of wealth.
An Egyptian newspaper said Tuesday Mubarak is likely to make an apology to Egyptians soon for bad conduct of himself and his family.
Mubarak was forced to resign Feb 11 after 18 days of protests against his 30-year rule. He is at present under detention in a hospital in Egypt’s Red Sea resort Sharm el-Sheikh.
