Mubarak, family to reveal overseas bank accounts
April 10th, 2011 - 10:56 pm ICT by IANSCairo, April 10 (IANS) Toppled Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak said Sunday he and his family have agreed to any measures to be taken to reveal their overseas bank accounts.
Mubarak’s remarks came during a recorded audio speech aired by Dubai-based Al-Arabiya TV channel Sunday, Xinhua reported. These were his first public remarks since he was forced to step down Feb 11 after 18 days of street protests.
“I agree to give any written permission to allow the foreign ministry to contact its counterparts overseas to unveil any (bank) accounts belonging to me or my wife,” he said.
He also complained about accusations and libel about his and his family’s wealth.
“I am strongly pained regarding unfair campaigns and baseless accusations targeting my reputation and history,” he said in his message, which the channel said was recorded at Mubarak’s villa in Egypt’s Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.
Earlier this week, Egypt’s ruling military council decided to form a committee to investigate into the wealth of former president and his family.
The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces took the decision Tuesday after many complaints were filed against what was called the “unjustified swelling of Mubarak and his family’s wealth”.
The committee will issue measures to bar Mubarak and his family from accessing their bank accounts and assets.
Egypt froze the bank accounts of several former officials and their families Monday as part of the country’s anti-corruption campaign.
Mubarak has kept out of the public eye since the uprisings forced him to step down and hand power over to a military council.
The military rulers said on March 28 Mubarak and his family are under house arrest at the villa, and have been forbidden to leave the country.
Tens of thousands of Egyptians flocked to Cairo’s central Tahrir Square Friday, demanding prosecution and trial of Mubarak.
