New Delhi, Jan 19 (IANS) Amid a growing chorus from Congress MPs from Andhra Pradesh for a separate state of Telangana, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Wednesday said there would be further consultations on the issue. “I think the home minister had a meeting with leaders of political parties from Andhra Pradesh,” Manmohan Singh told reporters at Rashtrapati Bhavan after the cabinet reshuffle.
“They had gone back and will study the report of the Srikrishna Committee. There will be further consultations,” he added.
Manmohan Singh’s remarks came against the backdrop of some senior Congress MPs and ministers from Andhra Pradesh pressing for a separate Telangana state.
Recently, many Congress MPs from Telangana region met Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and made it clear that they have no alternative but to press for Telangana.
Some of them also threatened to resign from the Lok Sabha if a bill for carving a separate state out of Andhra Pradesh was not introduced in the Budget session of parliament beginning next month.
