New Delhi, Jan 27 (IANS) The Samajwadi Party (SP) Wednesday appointed veteran leader Mohan Singh as party general secretary and spokesperson in place of Amar Singh who resigned from the post recently.
Making the announcement, party general secretary Ram Gopal Yadav told reporters here that Mohan Singh was also made member of SP’s Parliamentary Board - another post that was held by Amar Singh.
Mohan Singh, 63, who lost the Lok Sabha elections from the Deoria seat this time, is regarded as the “think-tank” of the party. A three-time Lok Sabha MP, he has been associated with the socialist movement for over three decades.
Apart from announcing Mohan Singh’s name, Yadav said there would be two more general secretaries — Vishambhar Prasad Nishad and Ramasare Kushwaha.
Amar Singh had sent his resignation to Mulayam Singh Yadav Jan 6 from Dubai where he was holidaying. Amar Singh had said he was resigning on health grounds and Mulayam Singh accepted the resignation Jan 18 “with a heavy heart”.
Following Amar Singh’s resignation, actor-turned-politician Sanjay Dutt too resigned as general secretary.
The party also announced the appointment of senior party leader and Rajya Sabha member Brijbhushan Tiwari as SP’s national vice president.
Tiwari has been given the post after it fell vacant with the death of Janeshwar Mishra last week.
