Srinagar, April 25 (IANS) The Jammu and Kashmir police Friday detained Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, chairman of the moderate Hurriyat Conference, along with dozens of his supporters during a protest rally here. The police fired tear-gas shells and made baton-charge to disperse hundreds of Hurriyat supporters led by Mirwaiz near Munawarabad area of the city as they tried to march towards the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) office here after the Friday afternoon prayers.
Friday’s protest march coincided with the two-day visit of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to Jammu. Singh arrived in the winter capital Jammu Friday.
Hundreds of people, shouting pro-Pakistan and pro-freedom slogans, joined the procession immediately after the prayers, which was led by Mirwaiz and other senior Hurriyat leaders.
The arrests led to closure of shops in the old city areas considered to be a stronghold of the Mirwaiz family.
