Sep 8, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Merriam Webster is an American company that publishes reference books, especially dictionaries that are descendants of Noah Webster’s “An American Dictionary of the English Language”. The famous company has recently announced that the former Governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin’s word “refudiate” has become the Word of the Summer 2010. However, the company did not specify the meaning of the word.
The word “refudiate” exactly does not have a meaning. The whole issue about the word started when the first female Vice -President nominee wrote the word in her social networking site while commenting about Ground Zero Mosque. Sarah Palin asked the Ground Zero supporters if it did not “stab” them in their heart. She even addressed the Muslim community asking them to “refudiate”. When she was asked about the meaning of the word she gave her own reasons saying she coined the words “refute” and “repudiate” like William Shakespeare. However, since then this word has become one of the most top searches on web.
It seems that the former Governor of Alaska wanted to write something between “refute” or “repudiate”, the former word means to prove something wrong or deny the truth and the latter means to refuse any connection with something. Even John Morse, Merriam-Webster’s president and publisher said that people immediately knew what Sarah Palin was trying to say and “refudiate” is an interesting blend of “refute” and “repudiate”, however, the word is not real and does not have any meaning. The dictionary officials added “Refudiate” with “inception” and “despicable” and it became Sarah Palin’s word of Summer 2010. Now is the time to see if “refudiate” gets a meaning in future!
