Men suffer mental torture at women’s hands: Pakistani lawmaker
March 11th, 2011 - 2:34 pm ICT by IANSIslamabad, March 11 (IANS) Three women lawmakers demanding formation of a panel to study domestic violence walked out of the Sindh assembly after a male member said men in urban areas suffered mental torture at the hands of women.
The assembly Thursday saw the unique women-only walkout against the male legislator’s remark during discussion on a private member’s resolution that sought formation of a special panel to study the root causes of domestic violence against women, the daily Dawn reported Friday.
The resolution was moved by Ayesha Khoso.
Jam Tamachi Unar, speaking on the resolution, said it was a fact that women in rural areas were victims of violence, but men in urban areas suffered mental torture at the hands of women and the proposed committee should study this issue, the media report said.
The women legislators shouted “shame, shame” and Electric Power Minister Shazia Marri, Nusrat Sehar Abbasi and Marvi Rashdi walked out of the house.
Unar attempted to explain but was not allowed to speak by Deputy Speaker Shehla Raza.
He later reportedly said he had made the remark only as a joke.
