Meghalaya demands its own high court
March 22nd, 2011 - 8:58 pm ICT by IANSShillong, March 22 (IANS) The Meghalaya government Tuesday demanded a high court of its own in the state and said it would continue to pursue the issue with the central government.
“We are in the process of approaching and reminding the government of India of the need of having a separate high court, but we need to have the infrastructure (for setting up the high court),” Deputy Chief Minister Bindo Lanong said in the assembly.
Replying to a question by Manas Chaudhuri (Independent), Lanong said having a separate high court would help dispose pending cases faster.
At present, Meghalaya has a permanent bench of the Guwahati High Court. It was set up in Shillong Feb 4, 1995.
All the eight northeastern states, excluding Sikkim, come under the jurisdiction of the the high court. Sikkim has a separate high court.
