Nov 18, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Lisa Murkowski was declared the winner in the race for the Alaska senate seat by media house this Wednesday. The independent candidate became the first write-in candidate to have won in 6 decades and her win has come as a shock to many who predicted that her opponent, the Tea Party backed Joe Miller would make a clean sweep of the mid-term elections. With just a few ballots left to be counted, Lisa Murkowski lead the Republican candidate by more than 10,000 votes.
Th dramatic turnaround in the political climate has not been taken lightly by Joe Miller who is ye to ‘concede’. He said recently that less than 1% difference separated his and Lisa Murkowski’s total and believes that anything is possible if the ballots are recounted with a consistent standard. His loss at the hands of the write-in candidate has also been somewhat of an irony as he was seen discussing the furniture and name plaque for his Washington office recently. The opinion polls in Alaska were unreliable to say the least as Lisa Murkowski showed a 15% deficit when pitted against Joe Miller and 7% in a poll conducted 3 days before the elections.
After the news of her win (informal) was announced, Lisa Murkowski flew to Anchorage to speak to her supporters. She called the moment ‘wow’ and said that it felt ‘mind-boggling’. Alaskan GOP Chairman Randy Ruedrich said, in spite of his party backing Joe Miller, that he would call for Joe Miller to end his campaign and respect the will of the voters. Joe Miller’s spokesperson said that the Republican senate hopeful will discuss the matter with his campaign and a decision will be made shortly.
