Mayawati blocking welfare measures: Rahul GandhiJuly 15th, 2008 - 9:12 pm ICT by IANS
Amethi (Uttar Pradesh), July 15 (IANS) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, visiting his parliamentary constituency of Amethi, Tuesday said Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati was not taking adequate measures to implement several welfare schemes announced by the central government. “The National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) and the loan waiver scheme for farmers are a couple of examples that expose the Uttar Pradesh government’s lackadaisical approach towards the schemes sponsored by the central government,” Gandhi said in a brief interaction with reporters here.
Congress general secretary Gandhi, on a three-day visit to Amethi, also laid the foundation stones for 24 houses to be built under a scheme - the Adarsh Pradarshan Awasiya Pariyojana - meant for the poor.
He assured the people of his constituency that Amethi would be developed as a “role model” for various development projects.
He said his party, which leads the central government, was set to launch several new schemes to uplift the poor.
