Jan 17, (THAINDIAN NEWS) 95-year-old Communist, Jyoti Basu died on Sunday after suffering for days from a pneumonia attack. The veteran politician had served the state of West Bengal for 23 years as Chief-Minister from the year 1997 before being replaced by CPM’s Buddhadeb Bhattacharya and that too due to his own bad health. After days of being admitted in AMRI, in Kolkata, he lost his fight on January 17th.
On January 1st, the communist patriarch was admitted to AMRI where he was detected of infection and chest congestion. Next day itself he had to be shifted to the ICCU where he was put on the life support system a.k.a the ventilator. The immediate region where the hospital is located was packed up with media and security in order to maintain his safety.
The news of his death has not come as a surprise given the fact that his patrons knew how ill he was, having reached old age of 95. The condolences of people have begun to come in even as the news of his death spreads. India’s Home minister, P. Chidambaram expressed his grief and so did CPI leader Biman Bose. Days earlier Mr Prime Minister himself had come to visit the ailing man in the hospital. He was accompanied by West Bengal’s current Chief Minister and The country’s finance minister, Pranab Mukherjee.
The Marxist’s personal doctor was the one who gave out the news that Jyoti Basu took his last breath at 11.47 AM. The deceased leader was a widower and is survived by Chandan, his son. The leader played an important role in Indian and State politics even after leaving his position of CM and will be remembered by all of us for years to come. God Bless His Soul.
