Marathi vs migrants - cops told to study leaders’ speeches

Mumbai, Nov 4 (IANS) Maharashtra Home Minister R.R. Patil Friday ordered the Mumbai police to study the recent inflammatory speeches by various political leaders on the Marathis versus migrants issue.
“The report is expected within two days. After that we will decide on the type of action to be taken if anything objectionable is found in the speeches,” Patil said without taking any names.
He was responding to questions from media persons Friday evening over Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray’s statement warning of “riots” if Congress leaders like Sanjay Nirupam and Kripashankar Singh and Samajwadi Party state chief Abu Asim Azmi continued to make provocative statements.
Nirupam had said a fortnight back that north Indians could bring Mumbai to a halt if they took even a day off as they provided some of the most essential services. This triggered a wave of protests.
Earlier this week, Kripashankar Singh called for an end to the verbal wars, but Azmi dared the Shiv Sena and the MNS by declaring that “Mumbai does not belong to anybody’s father.”
Both the Sena and the MNS attacked the Congress and Samajwadi Party leaders for these statements, with Raj Thackeray warning of “extreme reactions from Marathis, including riots”.
