Maoists kill CPI-M activist in West Bengal
June 21st, 2010 - 5:11 pm ICT by IANSKolkata, June 21 (IANS) A Communist party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) activist was killed Monday in Ranibandh village in West Bengal’s Bankura district by suspected Maoists who claimed he was a police spy.
Police sources said Sachidananda Karmakar, a CPI-M local committee leader was dragged out from his residence Sunday night by a group of left wing ultras.
“Sachidananda’s body was recovered Monday morning from a road nearby. A few posters of Maoists claiming responsibility for the death was found from the spot,” said an officer of Ranibandh police station.
The posters read: “Sachidananda was killed for acting as a police informer”.
Superintendent of Police Vishal Garg said: “He was shot death and we suspect that the Maoists are behind the crime. An investigation has been initiated.”
In another incident, a private bus was set ablaze by Maoists at Sarenga in the district Sunday night.
Police said the ultras dragged out passengers from the bus, beat them up and then torched the vehicle.
The Maoists were observing ‘black day’ Sunday in three western districts — West Midnapore, Bankura and Purulia.
Sub-divisional Police officer Miraj Khalid said: “The modus operandi suggests that the crime was committed by Maoists.”
