Maoism is a major problem, says PM (Lead)

New Delhi, May 22 (IANS) Speaking on the third anniversary of the UPA-II government, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Tuesday listed his government’s achievements but said Maoism remained “a major problem”.
At a dinner for leaders of his Congress party and its allies, the prime minister said the United Progressive Alliance government had achieved many successes in the last three years.
While the situation in Jammu and Kashmir was “by and large satisfactory”, he said “Naxalism (Maoism) continued to be a major problem”.
Manmohan Singh admitted that there was “public frustration and anger” on the issue of corruption.
He promised that his government would seriously address corruption both legislatively and with administrative measures.
After his brief speech in English, the prime minister released a report card of his government’s past 12 months.
He handed over the first copy to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, who is also the UPA chairperson.
“I believe the annual report we are releasing today presents an objective statement of what we have achieved over the past year.”
He said he would welcome an informed and constructive debate on the government’s claims. “I will be the first one to say we must do better,” he quickly added.
The prime minister said one of the highlights of his government’s success was on the economic front.
“Despite an adverse international environment, the Indian economy has grown by 7 percent in 2011-12 which is among the highest in the world,” he said.
Sustained high rates of growth had helped the government to pursue an inclusive growth and equity, he said. Poverty had fallen considerably, he added.
Manmohan Singh first became prime minister in 2004. His second five-year tenure began in 2009.
