Manmohan will be PM if UPA comes to power: CongressApril 24th, 2009 - 10:30 pm ICT by IANS
Kolkata, April 24 (IANS) Rubbishing statements by some UPA partners that the coalition’s prime ministerial nominee was still undecided, Congress spokesperson Anand Sharma Friday said the party’s choice Manmohan singh would occupy the high post if the alliance comes to power.
“The Congress will lead the UPA government. The congress nominee will be the prime minister, and Manmohan Singh, being our choice, will be the prime minister,” Sharma said at a media meet here.
United Progressive Alliance (UPA) partners Sharad Pawar of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Lalu Prasad of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) had said that while Manmohan Singh was the Congress’ choice for the top job, the coalition would decide on their prime ministerial candidate after the Lok Sabha polls.
Sharma, also minister of state for external affairs, said the Third Front was as irrelevant now as it will be after the elections.
“Where is the Third Front? In my view it is non-existent, irrelevant. It will be equally irrelevant after the elections,” he said.
“With so many ambitious leaders around, the Third Front will never be able to project a prime ministerial candidate,” he added.
