On Board Air India One, June 17 (IANS) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Wednesday said his government has plans to take “effective action” against violence propagated by radical leftwing militants.

“I had said many times that Naxalism is a great danger to our polity,” Manmohan Singh told journalists while on his way back from a three-day visit to Russia.

“The home minister (P. Chidambaram) has good ideas. We will take effective action and we have plans,” he said. He, however, refused to disclose these plans saying it would not be sensible to “go in public (with) what we propose to deal with the menace”.

“But its seriousness is fully appreciated and recognised by our government,” he added.

In Lalgarh area of West Bengal, Maoist rebels have killed seven activists of the state’s ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) in the past seven days.

Maoists control several parts of central and eastern states and recent intelligence reports have revealed they have set up bases in 12 districts in western Uttar Pradesh bordering Delhi, Haryana and Karnataka.
