The incident - that had not been revealed till July 9 - occurred July 1 and was confirmed by Temer’s office.
The weekly magazine said when the car carrying Temer came to a stop on a Sao Paulo street, a man approached the window and tapped on it.
Temer’s personal bodyguards from another car spotted that the man was hiding a handgun, and called out to him to stop and stay where he was.
The unidentified assailant managed to escape, but dropped the gun that turned out to be a toy.
Veja reported that once Temer saw there was no danger, he chose to continue on his way and let the robber escape. He didn’t inform the incident to the police.
Hold-ups at traffic lights have become common in Sao Paulo, Brazil’s largest city with a population of almost 18 million.
