Kolkata, Feb 27 (IANS) Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee Saturday said she will write to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi urging them to roll back the hike in fuel prices.
“The common people are already facing the heat of price rise and this fresh hike in petroleum prices will further add to their burden.
“I have decided to write to the prime minister and UPA chairperson requesting them to roll back the rise in petroleum prices,” Banerjee said Saturday at her Kalighat residence.
She said the increase of fuel price would have an effect on all the essential items in the country.
“We all must to unite against the price rise issue. The state government should also reduce the existing cess on petroleum,” the minister added.
Banerjee also met West Bengal Governor M.K. Narayanan at Raj Bhavan here Saturday.
“This was my first meeting with the governor. I have told him about the political violence going unabated across the state,” she said.
She also demanded compensation and jobs for the family members of the police officers who were killed in Maoist attacks in the state since 2004.
“If the state government fails to provide jobs and compensation to the family members of slain police officers, the railways ministry will do that,” Banerjee said.
