Mamata slams Congress independents as CPI-M agents

Kolkata, April 6 (IANS) Trinamool Congress Chief Mamata Banerjee Wednesday dubbed the independent candidates fielded by dissident Congress leaders as ‘brokers’ of the state’s ruling Marxists, and said the alliance has been forged between two parties, and not between leaders.
“The alliance is between the Congress and the Trinamool Congress. It’s not just between a few leaders. Those who are contesting are brokers of the CPI-M. Every time they are being fielded by the Marxists to make dent in the opposition vote bank. We are aware of it. But this time, they won’t be able to make any impact,” said Banerjee, when asked whether the independent candidates fielded against Trinamool nominees would make a difference.
Banerjee announced she will visit various districts in northern West Bengal from April 10.
“I have heard that Soniaji (Gandhi) will also campaign in various north Bengal districts. It is good. I will call Congress candidates wherever I campaign. Where Congress leaders will campaign, there Trinamool candidates will be called by them. I have also heard that Prime minister (Manmohan Singh) will attend a joint campaign in Kolkata,” said Banerjee.
Banerjee also welcomed a Calcutta High Court ruling permitting use of microphones from April 9 between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m.
“This is good. And from April 13, it will be allowed till 10 p.m.,” said Banerjee.
