Mamata questions success of Lalgarh operations

Kolkata, Oct 21 (IANS) Expressing shock over the Maoist attack on a West Bengal police station Tuesday, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee Wednesday urged the central government to investigate whether the operation by the security forces against the Leftist ultras in Lalgarh was yielding any results.
“I am shocked at what is happening. Two police officers have died. It is unfortunate especially when a joint venture is going on (between the central government and the state),” Banerjee told reporters.
“I am sorry that people are helpless in this region as Maoists have powerful arms,” she said.
Banerjee appealed for the restoration of peace, but refused to comment on the conditions set by the Maoists for releasing Dutta.
A group of around 50 Left-wing rebels, riding motorcycles, abducted the Sankrail police station Officer-in-charge Atindranath Dutta and shot dead sub-inspector Dibakar Bhattacharya and assistant sub-inspector Swapan Roy, before decamping with 19 firearms from the police station Tuesday in West Midnapore district.
CPI-Maoist leader Kishanjee has sought the release of arrested CPI-Maoist women members in the 40-60 age group and those who have children at home as the condition for setting the police officer free.
