Kuala Lumpur, Aug 16 (IANS) The Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) plans to push the age limit for the membership of its youth wing from 40 to 45 “to enable the party to have a new generation of leaders”.
The age limit for MIC youth and its executive committee members will be extended in order to let more people join the youth wing, MIC president S. Samy Vellu said Saturday.
Vellu, 73, has been heading the party since 1979 and is into its 11th term now. A lawmaker and a minister for several years, he lost the election last year.
He said a committee set up to look into the amendment to the party’s constitution had completed its report and it would be tabled to the MIC general assembly Sep 12 for approval, The Star said.
“This is important as MIC gears up its preparations for the next general election where over two million voters will vote for the first time,” he said in his speech at the opening of the meeting for MIC Wanita, the women’s wing, Youth and other party front organisations.
MIC is the country’s oldest party that speaks for the two million-plus ethnic Indians who comprise about eight percent of Malaysia’s 28 million population.
