Lucknow, June 30 (IANS) Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati Tuesday asked the central government to make public the Liberhan Commission report on the demolition of the Babri Masjid and punish the guilty.
“The report should be made public as it would be in the interest of transparency,” Mayawati told reporters here.
She said those indicted by the probe panel should be punished severely.
“Now, the entire country will watch the action the central government takes against those involved in the demolition. Now, it is to be seen whether the central government would be able to muster the courage needed to punish the guilty,” added Mayawati.
Justice (retd) M.S. Liberhan Tuesday presented to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh his report. The panel was set up in 1992 “in connection with the Ram Janambhoomi-Babri Masjid incident”, according to a Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) statement.
The commission was mandated to investigate the Dec 6, 1992, demolition of the 16th century mosque that led to widespread communal violence.
“The commission should not have taken such a long time in its investigation as it results in the wastage of money,” Mayawati said.
The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo said her party “hopes that the commission would have checked th role of the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the demolition of Babri Masjid”.
