Major upsets in the elections

New Delhi, May 13 (IANS) Some of the major upsets in the assembly elections in four states and one union territory:

- Outgoing West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee (Communist Party of India-Marxist) lost in Jadavpore constituency by 16,684 votes to Trinamool Congress’s Manish Gupta, his former chief secretary.

- Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) president Chandra Mohan Patowary lost in Dharmapur, his home ground, to Congress rival Nilamoni Sen Deka by over 5,000 votes.

- West Bengal Industry minister and CPI-M politburo member Nirupam Sen was defeated by Trinamool Congress candidate Rabiranjan Chattopadhyay by a margin of more than 36,438 votes in Burdwan South seat.

- West Bengal Finance Minister Asim Dasgupta lost to Amit Mitra of TMC by 26,154 votes in Khardah

- West Bengal Sports Minister Kanti Ganguly lost to Debashree Roy of TMC by 5,553 votes in Raidighi in South 24 Parganas.

- Former Tamil Nadu social welfare minister Poongophai Aladi Aruna (DMK) lost from Alangulam.

- Former Tamil Nadu finance minister K. Anbazhagan (DMK) lost from Vilivakum

- Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K. V. Thangkabalu lost from the Salem constituency.
