Manchester, Sep 16, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Amidst raging discussion on whether the win of Tea Party-backed candidates will act as a hindrance in the path of the Republican party’s rise to power, the win of Kelly Ayotte brought some respite. The former State Attorney General Kelly Ayotte who was being backed by former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin and the mainstream Republicans, registered a lead of around 1,600 votes over Manchester lawyer Ovide Lamontagne. Although initial reports on Wednesday morning speculated a win for Ovide Lamontagne, it was Kelly Ayotte who came up with more supporters. The former State Attorney General will now face Democratic Representative Paul Hodes in a race to replace returning Republican Governor of New Hampshire Judd Gregg.
Ovide Lamontagne was being backed heavily by the local tea Party activists who kept no stone unturned to ensure his win. However, Kelly Ayotte on her part had a strong backing from Sarah Palin and the moderate Republican party members. Her win on Wednesday night was celebrated by the party members as she is being considered as a prospective candidate this fall to replace Republican Judd Gregg. On Wednesday night Kelly Ayotte said to the supporters who gathered at her campaign headquarters that she aims to finish “what Sen. Gregg has started”. She also maintained that during her senate race campaign she would be focusing on advocating lower spending and personal responsibility.
Ovide Lamontagne conceded the race on Wednesday night after almost all the precincts reported. He mentioned to media sources that although he was disappointed with the results of the elections he respects the final decision. Ovide Lamontagne cannot ask for a recount as he has lost by a margin that is within 1.5 percent of the total votes cast.
