Nagpur, Dec 13 (IANS) Uproarious scenes continued in the Maharashtra assembly for the second consecutive day Tuesday with some Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislators burning paddy inside the legislature premises, leading to their suspension for an year.
BJP members Nana Patole, Pasha Patel and Nana Shamkhule made a bonfire of paddy straw outside the legislature building here to highlight their demand for better remuneration for farmers.
They also squatted on the steps of the assembly, raised slogans and burnt the paddy even as the fire brigade was summoned as a precaution.
Taking a serious view, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Harshwardhan Patil moved a motion seeking the suspension of Patole for one year as he was allegedly seen lighting the fire.
State BJP chief Sudhir Mungantiwar strongly objected to the suspension but it was passed by a voice vote.
Patole hails from the Vidarbha region of the state which has witnessed a spate of suicides by debt-ridden farmers in the past few years.
The suspension led to another din inside the house, forcing the speaker to adjourn it for the day.
This was the second instance of suspensions of legislators Tuesday — earlier two Maharashtra Navnirman Sena legislators, Prakash Bhoir and Nitin Bhosale, were suspended for the day after they waved an objectionable banner inside the house demanding resignation of Tourism Minister Chhagan Bhujbal.
Later, they apologized and the suspensions were revoked by speaker Dilip Walse-Patil.
