Bhopal, Feb 21 (IANS) Madhya Pradesh’s Leader of Opposition Jamuna Devi was arrested Thursday after she led a protest march into the chief minister’s residence here with party activists and workers of a recently closed garment unit. Police took them into custody as soon as Jamuna Devi and other Congress leaders moved towards Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s residence with the workers and entered the area marked prohibited.

Maral Overseas Kaamgaar Ekta Sangathan, the representative body of Maral Overseas’ workers, alleged the management had closed the unit even after the state government rejected its demand.

The company workers have been on a sit-in protest in the capital for the last three days.

On Thursday, Congress leaders including spokesman Manak Agarwal and former legislator P.C. Sharma led by Jamuna Devi arrived at the protest spot and asked the workers to move towards the chief minister’s residence to press for their demands.

But they were stopped by the police and later arrested. The leaders have refused to be freed on bail.

According to a press release from the opposition leader’s office, Jamuna Devi wants the government to ensure that the garment unit starts functioning and workers are paid their dues.
