Lokpal bill should reflect will of parliament: Citizen’s group
August 24th, 2011 - 7:13 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Aug 24 (IANS) The Lokpal bill should should reflect the will of parliament and the people and be passed expeditiously, the National Confederation of Officers Associations (NCOA) said in a statement Thursday.
The group, comprising academics, journalists, activists and others from various fields, also demanded that parliament ensure that the best possible legislation is enacted.
“Considering the seriousness of the issue as well as the problems of implementation, the parliament should ensure that the best possible legislation is enacted and that consideration is not restricted to the differences between the Government Bill and the Jan Lokpal Bill and or any other Bill presented by other vocal sections of the civil society,” it said in a statement.
The group said it was “deeply disturbed by the events of the last fortnight, when an arrogant and ham-handed Government that has been associated with unprecedented levels of corruption has also sought to suppress dissent in the most unacceptable manner”.
It said parliament’s standing committee, which considers the version of any bill, must solicit views from a wide range of citizens.
Hazare was arrested on Aug 16 but released the same day. He has since been fasting for a strong Lokpal bill.
