Lok Sabha remembers Hiroshima, Nagasaki victims

New Delhi, Aug 6 (IANS) The Lok Sabha Friday remembered the victims of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings 65 years ago and reiterated its pledge to make earnest efforts for the “elimination of all weapons of mass destruction and to abjure violence in all forms”.
“This manmade catastrophe has wreaked unimaginable havoc and misery on generations of humankind. Persons living in the region are still suffering from the after effects of the nuclear radiation caused by these bombings,” Speaker Meira Kumar said in a reference as the house assembled at 11 a.m.
Atom bombs were dropped on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki Aug 6 and Aug 9, 1945.
The house stood in silence in memory of the victims.
The Hiroshima bombing left 80,000 to 140,000 people killed and 100,000 were seriously injured. The Nagasaki bombing killed 74,000 people and left 75,000 seriously injured.
