Letters between Raja, PM will be released under RTI: PMO

New Delhi, June 22 (IANS) The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) Wednesday said it will provide the letters between Manmohan Singh and former communications minister A. Raja under a “reframed” request under the Right to Information Act.
Media reports Wednesday said that Central Information Commission had directed the PMO to release the letters, giving an “impression that these letters have not been disclosed by PMO in response to RTI applications”.
“However, Prime Minister’s Office has always provided the information sought, in response to RTI applications. Applicants who have earlier sought copies of correspondence between Raja and the PM have in the past been provided these copies by PMO,” said a statement from PMO.
It added that “in the case reported in the media, the actual request was not for these letters”.
“As the Commission, after consulting the applicant, has reframed the request as requiring disclosure of the aforementioned correspondence, copies of the same would be made available to the applicant in this case as well,” said the statement.
The letters relate to the issue of second generation spectrum, which has led to one of India’s biggest corruption scandals. Raja is now in jail in connection with the scam along with several others.
