New Delhi, April 18 (IANS) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Friday called for building an “inclusive and caring” India, which will be a true homage to those who sacrificed their lives to win freedom for the country. “It is our responsibility to build a new prosperous India that is inclusive as well as caring. It is our responsibility to build an India marked by harmony between communities, social justice, and the equality of all, irrespective of religion, region, language or caste,” Manmohan Singh said.

“By doing so, we will be able to pay the true homage to the those who sacrificed their lives for the cause of our freedom,” Manmohan Singh said while releasing the commemorative coins to mark the 150th anniversary of India’s First War of Independence in 1857.

The coins have the images of great freedom fighters Rani Lakshmbai, Bahadur Shah Zafar and Tatya Tope.

Central ministers Shivraj Patil, P. Chidambaram, Manishankar Aiyar, Ambika Soni, Kanti Singh, Pawan Kumar Bansal and other dignitaries were present at the function held at the Prime Minister’s Residence here Friday evening.

“Today, when we recall the patriotism and heroism of the people of that time, we must remember that they stood as one, and fought as one. As Indians, it was a great demonstration of the idea of unity in diversity,” Manmohan Singh said.

He said the freedom fighters had laid stress on the country’s shared history and common destiny.

“The way the unity of our people was spontaneously demonstrated in the freedom struggle underlined their unbreakable bond cutting across social and economic differences.”

Finance Minister Chidambaram said his ministry was proud to be associated with such a great gesture towards the country’s real heroes, while Tourism and Culture Minister Ambika Soni called for setting up a national memorial in Delhi in the memory of freedom fighters.
