Legislator lies down on Jharkhand assembly table
March 11th, 2011 - 8:29 pm ICT by IANSRanchi, March 11 (IANS) A day after a legislator tore off his clothes in the Jharkhand assembly, another opposition legislator Friday kept up the histrionics as he stood on the officials’ table in front of the speaker’s podium, raised the issue of drought and famine and then lay down on the table.
Nizamuddin Ansari of the Jharkhand Vikas Morcha-Prajatantrik (JVM-P) Thursday had torn his kurta to reflect the apathy of the state facing drought and drinking water problems.
Another JVM-P legislator, Samresh Singh, Friday advanced towards the speaker’s podium and climbed onto the officials’ table. He first shouted slogans to draw the government’s attention towards drought and famine like situation in the state and then lay down on the table.
Raghbuar Das of the ruling BJP moved motion for the legislator’s suspension. To avoid taking a view on this, Speaker C.P. Singh asked the legislator to apologise for the act.
“I have done nothing wrong by raising the issue of the people who are facing famine like situation,” said Samresh Singh and announced he would boycott the budget session instead of apologising.
Reacting on the development, Chief Minister Arjun Munda said: “It is an unfortunate incident. We do not expect such behaviour from a senior leader.”
Even opposition parties condemned Samresh Singh’s act. JVM-P legislator party leader Pradeep Yadav apologised in the house for the legislator’s behaviour.
