Law and order in parts of West Bengal very bad: Congress

- New Delhi, Nov 30 (IANS) The Congress Monday said that the law and order situation in certain parts of West Bengal was “very bad” but refused to say if the party wanted central intervention in the state.
Answering queries from mediapersons, Congress spokesman Shakeel Ahmed said it was for the government to decide whether to impose Section 356 or give a notice to the state or take some other measure.
“There is no proposal before the Congress (relating to situation in the state),” he said, responding to queries.
However, he added that the party has been receiving complaints of poor law and order situation in parts of the state.
Ahmed refuted suggestions that the proposed visit of a home ministry team to the state was under pressure from the Trinamool Congress. “There is no question of pressure,” he said.
Both houses of parliament witnessed adjournments Monday over the proposed visit of a central team, with the Left party members protesting the move.
The BJP also cautioned the government against misuse of Article 356, which gives the central government authority to dismiss any state government if the constitutional machinery in the state breaks down.
