Laura Bush Speaks On Women, Not Kagan Specifically

May 17 (THAINDIAN NEWS) In a recent interview with Fox News, Laura Bush was quoted as saying that she was in support of Elena Kagan. This raised much controversy has people on both sides of the political arguments ensuing voiced their opinions about the former president’s wife. The irony of the whole debate is out of the entire interview which was quite long, only four lines had anything at all to do with Elena Kagan at all…and those may have been vastly misrepresented.

Many headlines are now announcing Bush’s support of Elena Kagan, saying that she feels that Kagan herself would be great. The true context of the conversation was slightly different however, when Chris Wallace asked Laura Bush ” I’d like to do a lightning round — quick questions, quick answers — on a variety of subjects. How do you feel about President Obama naming Elena Kagan to be the — if she’s confirmed, the third woman justice serving on the Supreme Court at the same time?” Laura Bush replied, “I think it’s great. I’m really glad that there will be three if she’s confirmed. I like to have women on the Supreme Court.” Then Wallace asked her, “Do you think it makes a difference?” To which she answered, “I think it does make a difference. And you know, I just like women to be represented in all parts of American political and civic life.”

Laura Bush did not comment specifically on Kagan, as the New York Daily News points out, nor did she raise objections. She simply answered two questions in a politically correct manner and then went on to answer many many more. The entire transcript can be seen from Fox News here.
