Mamata Banerjee Kolkata, Dec 14 (IANS) Lamenting lack of police infrastructure, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Wednesday said manpower shortage was taking a “psychological” toll on the force.

“I may be wrong, I am technically not efficient (sic) but I think police resort to firing and violence due to psychological stress.

“If six people are asked to control a mob of 40,000 then it may not be possible for them to control it. They may resort to excessive violence to save themselves. There is shortage of manpower, weapons and even batons. Some even lack proper training. All these things are affecting the policemen psychologically,” said Banerjee here at a police function.

The police in the state recently have been under the scanner following the killing of two people in police firing while two media persons were injured after they were beaten mercilessly by cops Tuesday.

Blaming the erstwhile Left Front government for the lack of police infrastructure, Banerjee said her government already has cleared the path for recruitment of 15,000 policemen while 5,000 more will be inducted in the next two months.

The chief minister said the constitution of new commissionerates at Howrah and Asansol-Durgapur in Burdwan has helped lower the crime chart there, adding three more commissionerates would come up at Saltlake and Barrackpore in North 24 Parganas and Siliguri in Darjeeling district.
