New Delhi, Jan 24 (IANS) External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna Tuesday moved the Supreme Court seeking quashing of a private complaint and the probe ordered by the Karnataka Lokayukta for his involvement in alleged illegal mining in the state during his tenure as chief minister (1999-2004).

Krishna has challenged the Karanataka High Court’s Jan 20 order declining his plea for the quashing of the private complaint and the consequent initiation of probe by Lokayukta.

The Lokayukta had initiated the proceedings on Dec 8, 2011, on the complaint by T. Abraham

Krishna’s petition said that policy decision of the government could not be looked into by the courts and the cabinet decision was a collective decision of the council of ministers and for which no one individual could be singled out for probe.

The Lokayukta is probing the de-reserving of the forest land by the Karnataka government. The complaint by Abraham alleged that as chief minister, Krishna and his successors, N. Dharam Singh and H.D. Kumaraswamy, had permitted illegal mining for pecuniary gains.

The case under the scanner of the Lokayukta involves the de-reservation of 34 forest blocks, which the complainant had alleged, was done at the bidding of mining sharks. There are widespread allegations of illegal mining in the iron ore-rich mining area of Karnataka.
