Krishna caught in sticky situation in Lok Sabha (Lead)

Meira Kumar New Delhi, Aug 4 (IANS) External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna was Thursday taken by surprise in the Lok Sabha when his name was called out by Speaker Meira Kumar to lay a statement on Sri Lanka on the table of the house.

Krishna took a couple of minutes to shift through the papers, before which the Lok Sabha secretariat staff member reached the statement to him.

As he later started reading out the statement, Meira Kumar intervened and came to the minister’s rescue. She prompted him to just lay the statement on the table of the house, which Krishna did.

This caused a mild consternation among the opposition benches, who grew restless over the minister taking time to lay his statement.

However, sources close to Krishna told IANS that he had just returned to the Lok Sabha after replying to questions from members of the Rajya Sabha and was still in the aisle of the lower house when the speaker called upon him to lay the statement.

Krishna was, for a moment, unsettled, as the statement was with his junior minister Preneet Kaur, whom he had requested to stand for him in the Lok Sabha, they said, adding that this had led to the delay in his laying the statement on the table of the house.
