Colombo, Nov 20 (IANS) A key accountability report that deals with alleged war crimes during the last phase of Sri Lanka’s three-decade conflict was handed over to President Mahinda Rajapaksa, an official said Sunday.

The Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) Chairman C.R. De Silva handed over the report to Rajapaksa at his official residence, Xinhua reported.

However, the report will not be made public until the president’s office studies it, said the president’s Director General of Media, Bandula Jayasekera.

The commission was established on May 15, 2010 after human rights groups raised concerns over alleged human rights abuses committed during the final stages of the war in Sri Lanka.

It was mandated to inquire into and report on a number of matters relating to the north-east conflict including possible war crimes during the last phase of the war that ended in 2009.

In the final report the commission has also made several recommendations to the Sri Lankan government to address some concerns and issues in the country.

A spokesman for the commission, Lakshman Wickramasinghe, told Xinhua that with the handing over of the report the commission will now end its mandate and close office.

More than 1,000 people presented oral evidence and 5,100 more gave written applications during the time the LLRC was in operation. The commission held over 50 sessions around the country including in the north and east.
