Kerala to order judicial probe into Kasargode firing
November 18th, 2009 - 7:21 pm ICT by IANSThiruvananthapuram, Nov 18 (IANS) The Kerala government Wednesday decided to order a judicial probe into the police firing at Kasargode Sunday that killed one person.
While a judicial probe will be ordered into the incident, “the terms of reference are yet to be decided”, Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan told reporters here after the weekly cabinet.
An Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) activist was killed Sunday as police opened fire to disperse a mob. The IUML was holding a reception to its leaders in the city and a large number of their supporters were present.
P. Karunakaran, the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) MP from Kasargode, had claimed IUML activists went berserk, tearing down party flags and banners of other parties, forcing the police to retaliate. The activist who died was identified as K. Shefik.
The Congress-led opposition United Democratic Front, which met here Wednesday, said the government should hear their views also while fixing the terms of reference for the probe.
“First the government should suspend the Kasargode Superintendent of Police Ramdas Pothen who used his pistol to open fire on an innocent youth… We are meeting Achuthanandan to insist that our views be taken before fixing the terms of reference,” UDF convenor P.P. Thankachen told reporters here.
