Kerala to hand over train sabotage case to NIA

Thiruvananthapuram, July 12 (IANS) Kerala Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan Monday told the state assembly that the probe into the sabotage on the Nilambur-Shornur passenger train last Thursday would be handed over to National Investigation Agency.
The brake pipe of the train had been tampered with and it had snapped at 20 places. The engine driver discovered the sabotage when the train failed not start.
On Monday, the Kerala assembly saw a rare instance when the government agreed to a discussion on an adjournment motion moved by the Congress-led opposition to discuss the increasing incidents related to alleged terrorist activities in the state.
Congress leader Aryadan Mohammed moved the motion. Mohammed hails from Nilambur where miscreants snapped the brake pipe of the passenger train.
The three incidents that Mohammed referred to was the Nilambur train sabotage, the discovery of explosives last week on a train at Mavelikera, and the chopping of the right palm of a college teacher by suspected Muslim fundamentalists last week.
CPI-M leader P. Jayarajan alleged that Mohammed was speaking like Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi who blames all terrorist activities to one particular community, leading to a brief furore in the house.
Replying to the debate, Balakrishnan informed that the state government would request the NIA to take over the probe into the Nilambur sabotage.
“We will also request the centre to see that the existing Explosives Act is suitably amended. We will soon reconstitute the anti-terror squad of the Kerala Police,” the home minister said.
