Thiruvananthapuram, June 7 (IANS) The Left Democratic Front (LDF) Thursday decided to field veteran Communist Party of India-Marxist leader and former State Planning Board member C.P. Narayanan as its nominee for the Rajya Sabha elections to be held here June 25.

Narayanan edits the popular party magazine ‘Chintha’ and is known more for his writings.

Three seats in the Rajya Sabha have fallen vacant from Kerala. The LDF has decided to field a second candidate, who would be from the Communist Party of India.

The arithmetic within the 140-member Kerala assembly — the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) holds 72 seats while the LDF has 67 seats — makes for a tight upcoming contest and the UDF is expected to win two seats, with the LDF wresting the third one.

From the UDF side, only the candidature of former legislator Joy Abraham of the Kerala Congress (Mani) has been announced. The Congress party is still undecided on who to field.
