New York, May 25 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Analysts were surprised when Democrat Kathy Hochul won the special election in upstate New York on Tuesday. When the race started, the frontrunner was the Republican candidate Jane Corwin who was expected to win the poll by a margin.

Kathy will now replace Chris Lee who stepped down in February after pictures of him with no shirt on appeared in public. The election of Kathy is however not going to change the GOP’s dominance of the House of Representatives. Some analysts say the GOP’s decision to scrap the Medicare and make some deep cuts accounted for Jane’s loss.

After winning the election, Kathy told her cheering fans that, “Tonight the voters were willing to look beyond the political labels and vote for a person, and vote for message that they believe in… We can balance the budget the right way, and not on the backs of our seniors.”

President Barack Obama who is touring Europe released a statement congratulating Kathy for winning the election. He stressed the need for America to concentrate on growth rather than cuts in tackling the soaring US deficits.

With the win, Kathy has become only the third Democrat to have done so in the mainly Republican-dominated territory.
