Chennai, June 2 (IANS) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK leader M. Karunanidhi Tuesday welcomed the candidature of Meira Kumar for the Lok Sabha Speaker.
In a statement issued here, he said: “The news that a woman is being elected unopposed to the position of Lok Sabha Speaker for the first time in Indian history is sweet.”
“The happiness doubles as the candidate is none other than the daughter of Babu Jagjivan Ram, who had been a minister for long time in the central government.”
The election of a woman as the Lok Sabha Speaker comes at an opportune time when the government is working towards providing reservation for women in parliament and state assemblies, Karunanidhi added.
Meanwhile, the state cabinet met here to discuss about the forthcoming assembly session, which begins June 17.
