Karunanidhi tells police to uphold human rights
August 28th, 2010 - 6:33 pm ICT by IANSChennai, Aug 28 (IANS) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi Saturday told the state police force not to violate human rights while arresting and questioning those suspected of crime.
Speaking at a meeting attended by district collectors and police Officials, Karunanidhi said: “The police force while arresting an accused or while interrogating should see that it does not violate the human rights of the individuals and should follow the advice of the government and courts.”
He said police should also ensure that custody death does not occur.
The chief minister asked police to promptly take action on public complaints so that people do not lose faith in them .
He also asked police officials to create public awareness about crime prevention.
According to Karunanidhi, during the past four years, 7,596 houses were built for police personnel at an outlay of Rs.362 crore. Another 5,787 houses were under construction at a cost of Rs.330 crore, he said.
He said an outlay of Rs.81 crore has been approved for police modernisation.
