Karunanidhi objects to economic criteria for quotas

Manmohan SinghChennai, Oct 4 (IANS) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi Saturday objected to the central government’s economic criteria for reservations in educational institutions.”We have been insisting that no economic criterion by way of annual income of the parents of students should be inserted for reservation to socially and educationally backward classes as contemplated by the Constitution of India,” Karunanidhi said in a letter addressed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, copies of which were released to the media.

The Tamil Nadu government, however, welcomed the raising of the ceiling of income from Rs.250,000 to Rs.450,000 for defining the ‘creamy layer’ among the Other Backward Classes (OBCs), since the move “would temporarily solve the issue of filling unfilled vacancies”, Karunanidhi added.
