Jyoti Basu discharged from hospital (Lead)
July 20th, 2009 - 12:26 am ICT by IANSKolkata, July 19 (IANS) Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) patriarch and former West Bengal chief minister Jyoti Basu, 96, was discharged from hospital Sunday night after his condition became stable. However, he will remain under medical observation for some time, an aide said.
Basu went straight to his Indira Bhavan residence in Salt Lake after leaving the private hospital.
“The medical board decided to release Jyoti Basu from the hospital today (Sunday) as his condition is stable now. But he will be under 24-hour medical observation at his residence,” his personal assistant Joykrishna Ghosh told IANS.
All necessary medical arrangements will be there at Basu’s residence and a team of doctors will also monitor the veteran Communist leader round the clock, he said.
The CPI-M leader, who was admitted to the hospital following gastro-intestinal complications and transient loss of consciousness last Sunday, was shifted out of the intensive cardiac care unit (ICCU) to a private room Tuesday as his condition improved.
On May 13, Basu had injured his left leg after a fall at his home and had to be hospitalised. In 2007, he had to be admitted to hospital after he cracked a rib due to a fall in the bathroom.
Born 1914 in Kolkata, Basu became chief minister in June 1977. He stepped down voluntarily on health grounds in November 2000.
